Art’s Birthday Edmonton 2021
“For the first time in the 13-year history of Art’s Birthday Edmonton, The Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society has announced that Art’s Birthday Edmonton 2021, taking place Saturday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m., will not be staged from a physical location due to the pandemic. Instead, the show will broadcast live on twitch.tv/beamsdotca .
Art’s Birthday Edmonton 2021 has already confirmed a lineup of performers, filmmakers and visual artists who will be part of the event. Artists playing live from quarantined locations include Alison Balcetis and Kelly Ruth, James Parrott and SkruntSkrunt. Visual artists so far tapped to exhibit their work during the show include Brenda and Jamie Philp and Will Truchon. Video productions will feature the likes of M.O.A.I.N., John Armstrong, Trevor DePagie, Christine Miller, Will Northlich-Redmond (US) and Paul Morris (UK). Additional acts will be announced some time before the performance date.
The show was originally slated to run at Collins Studio Gallery, which would have been the sixth location for Art’s Birthday ever since BEAMS took it over in 2010. Previous events took place at the Old Strathcona Community League, Ortona Armoury, Bohemia, Naked Cyber Café and the now-defunct Brittany’s Lounge. Under other presenters, Art’s Birthday first took place at The ARTery in 2008 and Scona Pool the following year.
Art’s Birthday originated in 1963 when French surreal artist Robert Filliou declared that art didn’t exist until a million years ago when someone dropped a dry sponge into a pail of water. Choosing his own birthday of Jan. 17 to celebrate the event, Filliou proposed a public holiday in celebration of art. It has since been adopted by participants in more than 20 countries.”
